Domestic Students Checklist
Welcome to ANU! We are looking forward to welcoming you to our ANU community. To help you prepare for your arrival, we have put together this checklist containing important information about arrival preparation, student administration and what you can expect when you arrive in Canberra.
Accept your offer
ACCEPT OFFER
Before you start, you will first need to accept your ANU offer. Once you have done so, you can start preparing for your arrival. We strongly encourage all commencing students to review this information prior to commencing studies at ANU.
Once you’ve accepted your offer
ORGANISE YOUR ACCOMMODATION
It is important to allow enough time to organise your accommodation in Canberra. If you are applying for one of the 18 residences on campus, make sure to complete and submit your application before the deadline through the accommodation page.
ANU accommodation guarantee has been extended to all ANU students, new and returning for Semester 2 2024 if application is submitted before 1 July 2024. For more details, visit the ANU Accommodation Guarantee page.
If you are looking to live off-campus, there are several options you can consider. The rental market in Canberra can be very competitive, so make sure to give yourself plenty of time to secure an accommodation. PLAN YOUR TRAVELS
ANU offers a free pick-up service for all first-year, first-semester commencing domestic and international students arriving in Canberra. You will be able to find further information about the operational hours and registration form on the Canberra Welcome Service page.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE AN AUSTRALIAN TAX FILE NUMBER (TFN)
You will be asked to provide your tax file number (TFN) when completing and submitting the Request for HECS-HELP Assistance Form. If you choose not to provide your TFN, you will not be entitled to HECS-HELP and will be required to pay your fees up front.
If you cannot quote your TFN when you enrol, you should either, obtain a TFN, or a "Certificate of Application" for a tax file number (TFN) from the Australian Taxation Office. Please be aware that it can take several weeks to obtain a TFN.
If you have applied for a TFN and have not received your TFN before Census date, please ensure you submit a copy of your "Certificate of Application" from the Australian Taxation Office and a copy of your Australia Post "Application Receipt" to Student Central on or before Census date.
Information on how to apply for a TFN can be found on the Australian Taxation Office website. Once you have been issued with your TFN, you will need to update your student record immediately. ANU will use your TFN to provide advice to the Australian Taxation Office regarding the amount of your loan.
EXPLORE FINANCIAL SUPPORT OPTIONS
Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for financial support under Centrelink. To explore your options and more information, visit Services Australia.
There are a number of Bursaries and accommodation scholarships available to provide support with university accommodation costs at ANU. Visit ANU Scholarships to explore more financial support and other scholarships offered at ANU.
EXPLORE YOUR COURSE OPTIONS
Before enrolling into your courses, it's important to learn about your degree on the Programs and Courses page. Ths page will provide you with information on program requirements and learning outcomes, the courses that you will study, fees, and career options.
To find your program page, in the search bar, type in your program name and select your program from the results list. Ensure to select the year that you are commencing your studies from the dropdown menu next to Academic Year on the top-right.
- Medical School, students will be emailed alternative enrolment instructions.
- Crawford School students should attend their relevant Crawford induction session(s) to enrol.
REGISTER AND ATTEND OUR PRE-ARRIVAL SESSIONS
To help prepare you for ANU, we will be holding Pre-Arrival Sessions to covering several topics including student administration and accommodation.
In the live sessions, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have from our team of experts. If the session is at a time that you are not able to attend, it is recommended that you still register as the recording will be sent to all stdents that have registered after the session.
SAVE THE DATE FOR O-WEEK
O-Week occurs the week prior to the commencement of classes in Week 1. O-Week is filled with a range of fun and informative events to support students with opportunities to connect with other students, meet your colleges, and find out about student support services offered at ANU.

Before O-Week
WHO TO CONTACT FOR HELP WITH ADMINISTRATION
ANU Student Central is your first point of contact for anything relating to student administration, advice and support services.
Our friendly team can help you with a range of enquiries from enrolling in your course and understanding fees and invoices, to getting your student ID card, graduation documents and more.
COMPLETE THE ESSENTIAL MODULES
Before you begin your studies at ANU, you will need to complete these essential modules. They’ll help you settle in, understand academic integrity, respect others and feel safe on campus. There are various online modules designed to help you prepare for your time in the University.
ENROL IN YOUR COURSES
All new students must complete enrolment to be able to start studying your courses. Enrolment is done via the Interactive Student Information System (ISIS). Once you have enrolled, you will then be able to access your course materials via Web Access to Teaching and Learning Environment (WATTLE) and obtain your ANU student ID card.
Before you enrol
Familiarise yourself with your degree requirements before enrolling by having a look at the Programs and Courses page. To find your program page, in the search bar, type in your program name and select your program from the results list. Ensure to select the year that you are commencing your studies from the dropdown menu next to Academic Year on the top-right. You can also explore your course options by looking under the 'Study' tab.
If you need additional advice speak with college advisor from your academic college. Some colleges provide course advice information via emails to your ANU email accounts. Refer to the college pages below to view available study plans, program planning advice and contact information:

When you are ready to enrol
All new students must enrol in courses by the second teaching week in the semester. If you do not enrol in courses, you will not be able to attend and access your classes. For more information on how to enrol, please refer to Student Central's Enrolment Information.
After you enrol
Once you have completed your enrolment, you can access your course materials via Web Access to Teaching & Learning Environment (WATTLE) and pick up your ANU Student ID card.
Wattle will host important information about course outline, course materials, assessments, lecture information and many more.
BUILD YOUR TIMETABLE AND SIGN UP FOR TUTORIALS
MyTimetable is the ANU official timetabling system enabling students to view the timetable for their enrolled courses, browse, then self-allocate to small teaching activities/tutorials that allow for better planning of their time.

SIGN UP FOR A STUDENT MENTOR
Participating students are connected to a later-year student mentor who can help you make new friends, answer questions, and share their knowledge and networks to help mentees settle into your study at ANU. To find out more and sign up for a mentor, visit the Set4ANU webpage.
JOIN ANU STUDENT FACEBOOK GROUPS TO CONNECT WITH OTHER STUDENTS
Before arrving at ANU, you can start connecting with fellow new students by following the social media accounts: you might want to start connecting with fellow new students. There are three student Facebook groups:
During O-Week… and beyond
YOUR FIRST TWO WEEKS...
- Pay your service and amenities fee (SSAF)
- If you have a disability, medical condition or will be a recognised primary carer during your time at ANU, you can organise a meeting with Accessibility to discuss the support you can receive during your studies.
GET YOUR STUDENT CARD
As an ANU student, you will need an ANU Student Card to get around the University, and as a form of ID when you are on campus! During O-Week, Student Central will have a dedicated area for students to obtain their student card. For times and locations, please visit the Orientation Week Event Page.
Student Central will take your picture when you arrive to get a student card, so look sharp! There is no option to upload a preferred photo for your Student Card.
NOTE: You must be enrolled in your courses to be eligible to receive a student card. Your student status of full-time or part-time will be noted on your card, and is based on the number of enrolled courses you have at the time of the student card being printed.

ATTEND NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION SESSION
The New Student Orientation Session is designed to provide new first-year, first-semester students with expert advice to help you understand key processes, available support and tips to prepare you for your journey at ANU.
Space is limited for this session, and you will need to register for the session. For more information and registration, visit the Orientation Week Event Page.
TAKE A TOUR
During Orientation Week, we offer a number of tours to help first-year, first semester students find their way around some key areas of the ANU Acton campus. To get more information about the tours on offer and the tour schedule, please visit the Orientation Week Event Page.
MEET YOUR COLLEGE
During Orientation Week, Academic Colleges will host induction sessions. They also host a range of events outside of these induction sessions to assist you with meeting your cohort and learning about your Academic College. Visit the Orientation Week Event Page to find the times and to register.
NOTE: these sessions are often not recorded and it is strongly recommended that you arrive in time to attend them.
ATTEND ORIENTATION WEEK EVENTS AND SIGN UP FOR SOCIAL PROGRAMS
An important part of settling into student life at ANU is establishing connections and familiarising yourself with the University community. There are many ways to start making these connections:
- Attend Orientation Week events to get course advice from your academic college, assistance with timetabling, meet support services available to you at ANU and to meet fellow new students. You will find these events listed on Orientation Week Event Page.
- Attend events that are being held with ANU Student Associations (ANUSA) throughout Orientation week and semester. You will be able to get more information on ANUSA Social page.
ORGANISE YOUR PARKING PERMIT
For students who plan to drive or have your car on campus, it is important to know the Conditions for Parking at ANU. ANU offers various parking options that you can choose from to best suit your circumstances.
Parking options include hourly parking, surface permit parking, and parking station permits. For more information on the different parking options visit the Parking options on Acton campus page.
If you have a permit, be sure to check where the permit allows you to park. Be sure to come in early as there are limited parking spaces on campus.
Students with a Government Disability Parking Permit can apply for ANU Disability Parking Permit in order to use accessibility parking spaces on campus, free parking, and extended parking times.
